As I work on building my blog, I want to focus on topics I can revisit each month. One of those topics is the books I’ve picked up—what I got and why I got them. To kick things off, I’m starting with a look at all the books I bought (or received) in 2024. There are some great finds here that I might not have had a chance to talk about otherwise.
Physical Books
Christopher Charlton Double Feature
📚 Absent Stars & Welcome to Dahmerville
🛒 Bought from: CharltonWrites.com
I picked up both Absent Stars and Welcome to Dahmerville from Christopher Charlton’s eShop in November. I became a fan of his work through the comic Black of Heart, and as I got back into reading, I wanted to support comic creators who had transitioned into writing novels. I hope to read one of these soon and will likely post a review.

The Number Room – Josiah Furcinitti
🛒 Bought from: Directly from the author
Josiah Furcinitti is someone I’ve interacted with a lot on social media, and after seeing him promote The Number Room, I decided to support his work. I ended up really enjoying this one—it’s one of the few physical books I actually read in 2024. If you’re curious, I wrote a review here.

All the Clever Words on Pages – Paul Harrison
🛒 Bought because: Recommendation on Facebook
A friend posted about this book on Facebook, mentioning that it explores the life of Aaron Weiss, the singer of the indie rock band mewithoutYou. I loved that band in my younger years—Weiss always had this mythical aura around him, with all sorts of rumors spreading even in the early days of the internet. This book is a bit outside my usual reading choices, but I’m excited to check it out.

Martyr! – Kaveh Akbar
🎁 Christmas gift from my wife
Martyr! was one of my favorite books of 2024, but I originally read it digitally. My wife got me a physical copy for Christmas so I could have it signed when Kaveh Akbar comes to town for a book talk this year.

Holly – Stephen King
🎁 Christmas gift from my mom
I told my mom to grab me one of Stephen King’s newer books for Christmas, and she delivered! I probably need to go back and finish the other books in the Mr. Mercedes collection before jumping into this one, but that’s not a bad problem to have.

KOBO Books
The Phoenix Project Series & DevOps Handbook
🛒 Bought from: Kobo Store
I picked up The Phoenix Project, The Unicorn Project, and The DevOps Handbook. I read The Phoenix Project with my technical book club and just started The DevOps Handbook. Once I finish that, I’ll probably move on to The Unicorn Project. These are great books for IT professionals, though I’m not sure how much appeal they’d have outside of that space.
Deadeye Dick – Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
🛒 Bought from: Kobo Sale ($1.99)
I’ve been wanting to revisit some of the classic authors I used to read, and this popped up on sale for $1.99—an easy buy.
Horror Movie – Paul Tremblay
🛒 Bought from: Kobo Sale ($1.99)
This might end up being one of my favorite reads of the year. It checks all the boxes for what I love in horror, and I couldn’t resist grabbing it at that price. I plan to write a review once I can put my thoughts into words.
A Mortuary for Songs – Elizabeth Guijt
🛒 Bought from: Kobo Store
This eerie short story about music completely captivated me. If you want to see my full thoughts, I wrote a review here.
This post ended up being pretty long since I covered all of 2024, but I expect these updates to be shorter going forward. What about you? What was your favorite book you purchased or received in 2024? How do you decide which books to buy? Let me know in the comments!
