This or that: Do you prefer hardcover or paperback books?
I recently ran a poll on Threads asking readers which format they preferred, and I was surprised to see paperback come out on top! It got me thinking—what makes one better than the other?

Why I Prefer Paperbacks (as a Reader)
I’m a bit torn on this topic, but if I had to choose, I’d go with paperbacks. As a reader, they are my go-to for physical books because:
✔️ They’re easier to store and carry.
✔️ They feel more comfortable in hand.
✔️ They’re more affordable, making them easier to take anywhere without worry.
✔️ Mass-market paperbacks are widely available and budget-friendly.
✔️ A well-loved paperback with creased spines and worn edges tells a story of its own.
Another bonus? I don’t mind lending them out to friends or coworkers—if they don’t make it back, it’s not the end of the world!
Why I Love Hardcovers (as a Collector)
That said, hardcovers definitely have their appeal, especially from a collector’s perspective. They look stunning on bookshelves and often include extra design features like:
✔️ Beautiful dust jackets and embossed covers.
✔️ Colored page edges and ribbon bookmarks.
✔️ Higher durability over time (if well cared for).
However, when it comes to actual reading, hardcovers can be a bit cumbersome. They’re heavier, less portable, and getting them banged up in transit takes away from their pristine look—unlike paperbacks, where wear adds character.
So, Which One Wins?

At the end of the day, I see myself as a reader first and a collector second. That’s why paperbacks will likely always be my preferred format. But I’d love to hear from you—which do you prefer and why? Let’s discuss in the comments!
